I wanted to create a classic fairytale illustration with a contemporary twist. I used a model who had animal skull tattoos and and gave her a wall of skulls in the foreground. Her casual pose belies her feral nature. There’s a darker side to mermaids, who lure unwary sailors to their deaths. . .
