Eileen Downes
What does it mean to be a "layerist" glass collage painter?
My unique kiln-formed glass collage artwork is composed of many
layers, each significant in the process of my art making. I use many
bits of chipped, broken, and intentionally cut colored glass sheets as
my "palette of paint," working the image by adding and subtracting
tonal values until I create the effect that I desire. Once in the kiln, the
magic happens; the mixing and melding of the colors begins, and the
anticipatory revelation upon the kiln opening is palpable. Sometimes,
later in the process, I add my pen and ink illustrations to enhance the
whimsy or dream-like feeling of the artwork. I thank the Lord for giving
me the gift to create and the courage to share it with others, and I am
blessed to have my work in Corporate Collections, museums, and
galleries across the US. I live and work out of my studio near
Portland, Oregon.
